Vancouver, September 22, 2002 - The loss of a cherished animal companion can be very upsetting. Honouring a beloved pet with a special tribute can be an important and comforting part of the grieving process. With this in mind, the Humane Society of Canada (HSC) has established the Book of Remembrance section at their website.

"The Book of Remembrance is a special place where people can write about their pets and even submit photos of their animal companions," says Al Hickey, HSC Western Regional Director. "These loving tributes will not only provide comfort to those who submit an ‘In Memoriam’, but also to others who have lost pets and who visit our Book of Remembrance. People who are mourning the loss of an animal companion often feel alone in their grief. Reading heartfelt tributes by others will provide support and comfort," states Hickey.

"A few paragraphs or a short story relating what a pet meant makes a beautiful tribute and constant reminder of the strength of the bond that exists between pets and people," states HSC Executive Director Michael O’Sullivan.

"Since the loss of a pet is different for every person and the grieving process can involve several stages, it is important to be aware of what is involved with mourning a pet. This is especially true for children who must come to terms with losing a ‘best friend’. In many instances the loss of a pet is a child’s first experience with death," says O’Sullivan.

"To help educate people on the topic of pet loss so that they will be better able to move through the grieving process and support others who are also mourning the loss of a beloved animal companion, we will be further developing our website’s pet loss section in the coming months including reviewing numerous books on this important subject," states O’Sullivan. "Being informed on the emotional roller coaster ride we can experience when a pet dies, how to cope during the stressful time following the animal’s death, how to help children deal with their loss as well as learning how to deal with others who may not be sympathetic or understanding of our feelings during this time is important".

The HSC Book of Remembrance will also include people who have helped animals and animal heroes who have assisted people.
