Manitoba Government Risks Lives of Two Orphan Bear Cubs

The Humane Society of Canada is asking for your help to save the life of "Makoon," a 30 pound male orphaned black bear cub and his companion, a second bear cub, who was never even given a name. Defying common sense and science, regrettably, earlier today, Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger accepted what is in our view, very poor advice from his wildlife biologists and released not only “Makoon”, but also a second bear cub, this one only six months old, into the wild to fend for themselves.

Help save Makoon the Orphan Bear cub

The Humane Society of Canada is asking for your help to save the life of "Makoon," a 30 pound male orphaned black bear cub. While we are grateful to Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger for responding to our call and that of many others to originally spare "Makoon's" life, we believe he is receiving poor advice from his wildlife biologists about what happens next.

Matching Gift Program Can Double Your Donation to Help Animals Says The Humane Society of Canada (HSC)

siameseshepherdsmallVANCOUVER, JUNE 12/2012 - With Christmas and the Holidays just around the corner, The Humane Society of Canada (HSC) is urging people to find out if the company they work for has a Matching Gift Program that can double their donation to  help animals.
"Sometimes, a person will have worked for a company for a number of years without realizing that their employer will match their kindness and generosity, dollar for dollar, meaning we can help even more animals at risk," explains, Al Hickey, HSC Western Regional Director.

To make it easier for people to check, The Humane Society of Canada, has a directory of companies in Canada and the United States which can be found here. Canadians living and working in the United States, along with Canadian employed by American companies here in Canada can also donate through a matching gift program.

The animal charity is also asking people to encourage their employer to set up a Matching Gift Program if they don't already have one, and can give them tips and guidelines on how to do this.  If a person needs help with finding their company, they can contact The Humane Society of Canada toll free by calling 1-800-641-KIND (5463) or writing to This email address is being protected from spambots. The Heat is On for Animals Says The Humane Society of Canada (HSC)

summer dog in carVANCOUVER, June 12, 2012 – In light of recent tragic events; the attempted rescue of a dog locked in a car near Vaughan Mills and a dog rescued from the swealtering heat of a car parked at a Toronto mall. With a dramatic, hard hitting public service announcement: The Heat Is On, The Humane Society of Canada is again launching its nationwide campaign asking people to leave their pets at home during hot weather. Pets Need Protecting & Comfort from Thunderstorms & Fireworks

"Some pets become anxious or nervous while other are terrified and try to escape – running the risk of becoming lost or injuring themselves," suggests O'Sullivan. "These animals need comforting and to be protected from potential harm."

Time for Cubs to Thank Their Mothers

dogandcat VANCOUVER, May 8/2012 -- They carried us, held us when we were frightened, comforted us when we cried, and made us laugh along with them.  Mothers.   Where in the world would we all be without them?    "As a four year old boy growing up in Leaside, I watched as my mother cared for an orphaned baby bird: "Mom," I said, you're amazing."  She looked at me with those gentle blue eyes, and replied: "Michael, I'm nobody special.  Anyone could do this.  Everyone should do this."   "Fifty four years later after a lifetime of helping animals, my mother's words still ring true today," says Michael O'Sullivan, Chairman & CEO of The Humane Society of Canada (HSC).
