The Humane Society of Canada is asking for your help to save the life of "Makoon," a 30 pound male orphaned black bear cub and his companion, a second bear cub, who was never even given a name. Defying common sense and science, regrettably, earlier today, Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger accepted what is in our view, very poor advice from his wildlife biologists and released not only “Makoon”, but also a second bear cub, this one only six months old, into the wild to fend for themselves.

VANCOUVER, JUNE 15/2012 - Referring to the ever shifting sands of fame and fortune in a glittering place where gossip and scandal rules, there is an old saying amongst celebrities; "If you want a friend in Hollywood, get a dog." In fact, the idea caught on so fast that at one time or another, celebrities from all walks of life have had campanion animals of every shape, size, and colour and for more than a hundred years embraced a proud tradition of loving their pets and standing up for the protection of animals and nature," says Al Hickey, HSC Western Regional Director.

The Humane Society of Canada is asking for your help to save the life of "Makoon," a 30 pound male orphaned black bear cub. While we are grateful to Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger for responding to our call and that of many others to originally spare "Makoon's" life, we believe he is receiving poor advice from his wildlife biologists about what happens next.

siameseshepherdsmallVANCOUVER, JUNE 12/2012 - With Christmas and the Holidays just around the corner, The Humane Society of Canada (HSC) is urging people to find out if the company they work for has a Matching Gift Program that can double their donation to  help animals.
"Sometimes, a person will have worked for a company for a number of years without realizing that their employer will match their kindness and generosity, dollar for dollar, meaning we can help even more animals at risk," explains, Al Hickey, HSC Western Regional Director.

To make it easier for people to check, The Humane Society of Canada, has a directory of companies in Canada and the United States which can be found here. Canadians living and working in the United States, along with Canadian employed by American companies here in Canada can also donate through a matching gift program.

"Some pets become anxious or nervous while other are terrified and try to escape – running the risk of becoming lost or injuring themselves," suggests O'Sullivan. "These animals need comforting and to be protected from potential harm."
