The Humane Society of Canada at the International Tiger Summit

tigerOn November 20th, 2010 in St Petersburg, Russia, The Tiger Summit brought together 13 range states of the tiger to discuss ways to save this species from extinction.  In recent years tiger poaching has been increasing, and 2010, the Chinese year of the Tiger, has been no exception.

INTERPOL co-ordinated operation targeting illegal trade in endangered reptiles leads to arrests and seizures worldwide

boa constrictorNov 2, 2010 - A worldwide operation co-ordinated by INTERPOL and involving 51 countries across all five continents against the illegal trade in reptiles and amphibians has resulted in arrests worldwide and the seizure of thousands of animals as well as of products worth more than 25 million Euros.

Yukon Wildlife Enforcement Blitz Yields More than 50 Violations

grizzlyfishingOct 8, 2010 - Env. Canada - Environment Canada officers have completed a two-week import/export border blitz at the Beaver Creek border crossing in Yukon Territory. Officers uncovered more than 50 violations under federal and territorial laws, including those under the Wild Animal and Plant Protection and Regulation of International and Interprovincial Trade Act (WAPPRIITA).

Alberta designates grizzly bears a threatened species

Illegal ivory and rhino horn trade target of INTERPOL co-ordinated operation across southern Africa

rhinoMay 18, 2010 - INTERPOL - A transnational operation co-ordinated by INTERPOL targeting wildlife crime across southern Africa has resulted in the location and closure of an illegal ivory factory, the seizure of nearly 400 kilos of ivory and rhino horn with a market value of more than one million dollars, as well as the arrest of 41 people.

N.L. harp seal hunt set to begin

Conference on the International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES)

citesbanner2 For nearly 20 years, the staff of The Humane Society of Canada have actively participated in the administration and enforcement of CITES, an United Nations treaty to which 175 nations, including Canada (which was a founding member) are signatories. CITES stands for the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species and is the most important wildlife treaty in the world.

Poaching: Zim probed by Interpol
