Canada Requests WTO Consultations on EU Seal Products Ban

harp seal pupDFAIT News Release - Nov 2, 2009 - The Honourable Stockwell Day, Minister of International Trade and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, today announced that the Government of Canada has taken formal action against the European Union’s ban on trade in seal products by requesting WTO consultations. WTO consultations are the first stage in the WTO dispute settlement process.

Canada, Nunavut and Greenland Sign Polar Bear Pact

polarbearcubsENS - October 30, 2009 - A polar bear conservation and management agreement between Greenland, Canada and Nunavut was signed today at Kangerlussuaq, Greenland. The pact caps months of work by all three parties to protect bears in hunting areas shared by the Canadian territory of Nunavut and Greenland, including Baffin Bay and Kane Basin.

CITES stands for the Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species and is the most important wildlife treaty in the world.
