japan-dog-refuses-to-leave-injured-friend20 March 2011, TORONTO – The Humane Society of Canada (HSC) is asking for donations to help the animal victims of the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami that devastated the country of Japan recently. In order to ensure that injured and lost animals are cared for and to help people affected by this natural disaster care for their pets, The Humane Society of Canada has begun coordinating relief efforts to help these affected animals and those who care for them.

kitten_earthquake1When tragedy strikes, animals are often forgotten and The Humane Society of Canada is ensuring that this doesn’t happen to the four-legged victims of this earthquake that has caused such incredible suffering and devastation.

In order to help ease the suffering of the animal victims, The Humane Society of Canada is asking the public to send donations for these relief efforts. The Humane Society of Canada sent aid when wild fires ripped through British Columbia and California. We helped animals injured in Hurricane Katrina and in Florida by Hurricanes Charley and Frances. HSC staff was on hand to help during the Persian Gulf War. We sent first aid supplies to Belize when they were hit by Hurricane Mitch and we have sent aid to the animals affected by Hurricane Ivan in the Caribbean.

Now we need to help Japan where there has been widespread destruction of buildings and infrastructure due to the earthquake and the resulting tsunami. The official, confirmed death toll has exceeded 5,400 people, with close to 10,000 people missing and tens of thousands now homeless.

The Humane Society of Canada has estimated that there are millions of dogs and cats in Japan, as well, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, there are thousands of farm animals that would also be affected by this disaster.

We are asking everyone to help us. Our work is funded entirely by donations from the public. The animals need your support more than ever!

Please help the Humane Society of Canada's efforts to help protect these and other animals from disaster by making an online donation - funds are made available to us immediately and we are able to send aid faster.
