Great Apes are our closest living relatives in the animal kingdom. The most recent scientific analysis indicates that chimpanzees and humans occupy sister branches on a family tree with 99.4% genetic similarity. Next on the tree are gorillas, then orangutans, followed by Old World monkeys. Devastated by the trade in bush meat, disease, war, and habitat destruction, these intelligent social animals are facing extinction within the next two decades. In the past we have funded projects to protect chimps, mountain gorillas and orangutans and rescue centres. We want to expand these programs to include other primate species and new initiatives.
