Toronto's dogs in parks strategy - Print E-mail
Tuesday, 28 March 2006

TORONTO, MARCH 28/06 – The Humane Society of Canada is asking every resident of Toronto to contact their local Councillor to find out exactly what is going on with the City’s Dogs in Parks Strategy. “We’ve been trying to get answers for months and all we get in return is a wall of silence. A letter written more than three months ago to Deputy Mayor Sandra Bussin found here on the subject of off leash areas still goes unanswered and the key civil servant, Ms. Sandy Straw, in charge of the strategy refuses to share any information with us,” said Michael O’Sullivan, Chairman & CEO of The Humane Society of Canada.

A recent article in the local Beach Metro News claimed that “The Humane Society” had been a part of discussions relating to the City’s Dogs in Parks Strategy. Nothing could be further from the truth says O’Sullivan whose family shares their home with a houseful of dogs and cats. “In fact along with our colleagues we have been repeatedly denied information regarding this strategy. Weary tax payers are fed with elected officials and civil servants who think they aren’t accountable to anyone. In the absence of information we can only assume the worst and we all need an open and honest public consultation on this important issue of social concern”, he says.

The animal charity says that it has been their experience that in areas where people are out actively walking their dogs, they not only clean up after their animals, but often pick up litter and other debris left behind on the beach. They also tend to discourage crime by acting as a neighbourhood watch. “Walking your dog is a valid recreational use of our parks and beaches. Whether your family includes a dog or not, we urge everyone to contact their local Councillor here to find out exactly what is going on,” urges O’Sullivan.
