May 6, 2005, VANCOUVER – May 8th is Mother's Day and The Humane Society of Canada (HSC) wants people to know that they can find that special gift for Mothers and Grandmothers who like animals and nature at The HSC Online Adventure Store.
"Our Online Adventure Store is well-stocked with items for animals and their humans,” says Al Hickey, HSC Western Regional Director. "We have great practical gifts that help animals and the environment – everything from hemp reusable coffee filters to wildlife t-shirts to a beautiful dolphin pendant/charm," states Hickey. "There are bird feeders with seed cakes for those who enjoy watching and feeding wild birds."
Hickey also recommends any of the numerous quality children's books that feature animals and humane messages are ideal for mothers (or fathers) to read to their children. “Mojo's Own Story, Smokey the Screech Owl, Clara the Chicken, Weep-Weep the Battered Bird, Hank the Fishy Heron and Flight to Freedom are all inexpensive, entertaining books with important messages," continues Hickey.
HSC Executive Director Michael O’Sullivan wants people to know that besides quality practical items, the Online Adventure Store also features some very unique items that help animals and protect the environment. “Women will enjoy helping animals in need by receiving the HSC ‘Wildlife Guardians Program on Mother's Day,'” says O'Sullivan. "This package includes a certificate of appreciation suitable for framing, a photo of the animal, a stuffed toy and a fact sheet on the threats facing the animal chosen. Animals in this program include: whale, dolphin, tiger, elephant, sea turtle, bear and lion."
Another thoughtful gift involves adopting an acre of tropical rainforest. According to O'Sullivan, "tropical forests are disappearing at an alarming rate of 149 acres per minute and 137 species go extinct every day." Recipients of this eco-gift will receive a certificate of appreciation suitable for framing, a photograph of the rainforest and a fact sheet on the threats facing this threatened ecosystem.
Not only do these gifts help protect the natural world, but they’re educational as well.
Purchasing gifts from The HSC Online Adventure Store helps in a variety of ways. By helping to pay for The Humane Society of Canada’s programs that protect animals and the natural world, people help pets, animals in need and the environment.
“The HSC Online Adventure Store allows us to provide shoppers with quality, unique eco-gifts and money is used to protect animals and the environment and people can visit the store here.”
He also encourages people to consider the Humane Society of Canada’s Book of Remembrance. This special section on our website honours the lifetime achievements of people who have helped animals as well as a memorial section for the animals who have been a part of that person’s family life. O’Sullivan, whose own mother passed away thirteen years ago, has included a special memorial and photograph of his own. “My Mom taught me all about kindness to animals and how to treat them with love and respect. She was the kindness and most gentle person I have ever met in my life,” he says.
