Scientists now believe that warmer oceans are not only leading to widespread die-offs in ocean species but also may be making some seafood favourites too toxic to eat. Warming waters in some areas are causing more frequent algae blooms leading to elevated levels of domoic acid, a neurotoxin, in the water that can build up in sea creatures including Dungeness crab, mussels, clams and anchovies. By removing inspection reports and information about the treatment of animals at thousands of research facilities, zoos, and breeders from its website, the U.S. Department of Agriculture has made it harder for animal welfare advocated to monitor government regulations on animals. Citing court rulings and privacy laws for the change in disclosure of the information, the documents, including records of enforcement would now be accessible only by Freedom of Information Act Requests, which sometimes takes years.
