siameseshepherdsmallVANCOUVER, JUNE 12/2012 - With Christmas and the Holidays just around the corner, The Humane Society of Canada (HSC) is urging people to find out if the company they work for has a Matching Gift Program that can double their donation to  help animals.
"Sometimes, a person will have worked for a company for a number of years without realizing that their employer will match their kindness and generosity, dollar for dollar, meaning we can help even more animals at risk," explains, Al Hickey, HSC Western Regional Director.

To make it easier for people to check, The Humane Society of Canada, has a directory of companies in Canada and the United States which can be found here. Canadians living and working in the United States, along with Canadian employed by American companies here in Canada can also donate through a matching gift program.

The animal charity is also asking people to encourage their employer to set up a Matching Gift Program if they don't already have one, and can give them tips and guidelines on how to do this.  If a person needs help with finding their company, they can contact The Humane Society of Canada toll free by calling 1-800-641-KIND (5463) or writing to This email address is being protected from spambots. "The directory often lists the contact person or department within the company, details about how to donate, and some companies will even match up to thousands of dollars for each employee.  If at first, the name of your company does not appear, type in the first letter of the nasme of your company and scroll through the list," says HSC Chairman & CEO, Michael O'Sullivan.

If your company is not on the list, then you can type in a new company request, and within five days, we can determine if your company has a program but for some reason just hasn't made the information available.

"In these troubled times, animals need our home, now more than ever before.  Everyting from dogs and cats and  horses to whales and dolphins and elephants and polar bears are facing more clear and present dangers and the only thing that stands between them and those that would cause them harm are caring people like you and I," explains O'Sullivan.

"We'll keep putting ourselves in harm's way to save them, but we can't do it without your help.  You can count on us, just like the animals can,"he promises.
