More than 100 beluga whales became trapped when ice formed on the surface of a series of lakes in the Northwest Territories blocking their exit into the Arctic Ocean. There is a real danger that the whales will drown if the ice completely covers the lake.
The Humane Society of Canada has written to the Department of Fisheries & Oceans urging them to consider humane methods to rescue these whales rather than have the trapped whales killed. Read more about it here.
