Recently we participated in a national conference sponsored by Health Canada which explored the ways of restricting the use of antibiotics in farm animal feeds. Each year, using over $69 million worth of drugs, farmers medicate farm animals with the same antibiotic drugs used for humans, at a high cost to public health. Bacterial resistance in animals is being passed on to people, cancelling out some of medicine's last all-purpose antibiotics. For reasons of human health and animal welfare, many people are choosing to either reduce or eliminate meat from their daily diet.
