The
Humane Society of Canada, working alongside many other concerned
individuals and groups is pleased to report that on June 13, 2002, Bill
C-10 Canada National Marine Conservation Areas Act was given royal
assent in the Canadian Senate.
This act, which is administered
by Parks Canada, will allow the federal government to create a system
National Marine Conservation Areas that are representative of Canada's
Arctic, Pacific, Atlantic Oceans and the Great Lakes.
Up until
now, unlike our terrestrial environment, Canada's marine &
freshwater environments were typically not focused on for conservation
activities; this act represents a first step in providing a framework
for protecting our waters.
