July 26, 2010 - Biggers & Callaham, LLC DBA Mice Direct Recalls Frozen Reptile Feed Because of Possible Health Risk

Biggers & Callaham LLC., D/B/A Mice Direct of Cleveland Georgia is recalling frozen reptile feed (mice, rats, chicks), because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The frozen reptile feed was distributed in all states, except Hawaii, through pet stores and by mail order and direct delivery.

Frozen reptile feed was shipped in plastic bags with the following product codes M-SP100, M-P100, M-PF100, M-F100, M-H100, M-W50, M-A50, M-JA25, R-P100, R-F50, R-PUP50, R-W50, R-S50, R-M20, R-L10,R-J5, R-C5, R-M3 followed by E9, F9, G9, H9, I9, J9, K9, L9 or A10, B10, C10, D10, E10, F10, G10 and whole frozen chicks in 25 count bags.

Human illnesses that may be related to the frozen reptile feed have been reported in 17 states. The recalled product should not be fed to animals, even after heating in a microwave oven, since the heating may not be adequate to kill Salmonella. The recall is based upon sampling by the FDA of frozen mice. The company continues their investigation.

July 2, 2010 - United Pet Group Voluntarily Expands Recall of Nutritional Supplements For Dogs to Include Additional Tablet and Powdered-Form Products for Dogs and Cats Because of Possible Salmonella Health Risk

United Pet Group, Cincinnati, Ohio is voluntarily expanding its recent recall of its Pro-Pet Adult Daily Vitamin Supplement tablets for Dogs to include additional pet nutritional supplement products for dogs and cats due to possible Salmonella contamination. The list of recalled products is provided below.

The recalled products are sold nationally at various retailers. The products include various United Pet Group Pro-Pet and Excel branded products for dogs and cats, and certain other private label brands of the same products. All of the affected products are in tablet and powdered form. These products are being removed from retail stores and consumers should immediately stop feeding these supplements to their pets. The affected products are those with expiration dates that include and are between "01/2013" and "06/2013." Products with expiration dates earlier than 01/2013 or later than 06/2013 are not included in this recall. The expiration date can be found imprinted vertically on the right side of the product label.

Diagnostic testing indicated that the product may contain insufficient levels of thiamine (Vitamin B1), which is essential for cats. Mar 8, 2010 - Nature's Variety Expands Nationwide Voluntary Recall to Include All Raw Frozen Chicken Diets with Any "Best If Used By" Date On or Before 2/5/11

Nature's Variety has expanded its voluntary recall of Chicken Formula Raw Frozen Diets for dogs and cats to include the "Best If Used By" dates of 10/29/10 and 11/9/10 because these products may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The recall includes the following products with a "Best If Used By" date of 10/29/10 or 11/9/10:

  • UPC#7 69949 60131 9 – Chicken Formula 0.75 lb trial sized medallions
  • UPC#7 69949 60130 2 – Chicken Formula 3 lb medallions

May 21, 2009 - Nutro Products Announces Voluntary Recall of Limited Range of Dry Cat Food Products

Nutro Products announced a voluntary recall of select varieties of NUTRO® NATURAL CHOICE® COMPLETE CARE® Dry Cat Foods and NUTRO® MAX® Cat Dry Foods with “Best If Used By Dates” between May 12, 2010 and August 22, 2010. The cat food is being voluntarily recalled in the United States and ten additional countries. This recall is due to incorrect levels of zinc and potassium in our finished product resulting from a production error by a US-based premix supplier.

Affected product was distributed to retail customers in all 50 states, as well as to customers in Canada, Mexico, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, New Zealand, and Israel.

Consumers who have purchased affected product should immediately discontinue feeding the product to their cats, and switch to another product with a balanced nutritional profile. While we have received no consumer complaints related to this issue, cat owners should monitor their cat for symptoms, including a reduction in appetite or refusal of food, weight loss, vomiting or diarrhea. If your cat is experiencing health issues or is pregnant, please contact your veterinarian.

March 10, 2009 - Alaska Canine Cookies Recalls Certain Canine Cookies Because of Possible Salmonella Health Risk

 

Alaska Canine Cookies of Anchorage, Alaska is recalling Peanut Butter, Power Bone and Carrot Cake flavors of Canine Cookies because they were manufactured using peanuts recalled by Peanut Corporation of America which have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Alaska Canine Cookies were distributed in our 4 stores, (Anchorage, downtown Anchorage in the 5th Avenue Mall, Homer, and Wasilla) and on the website (www.alaskacaninecookies.com).

All three flavors (Peanut Butter, Power Bone, and Carrot Cake) come in a "Filled with Fun" bag (diagonally striped bag containing 3 large bones) and a "Woof Pack" (15 ounce bag labeled "Alaskan "Woof" Pack" with the Husk E. Dog on the front containing approximately 45 medium bones). Both the Filled with Fun and the Woof Pack, as well as any other Canine Cookie with a 1 ½ inch bone shaped sticker reading "Peanut Butter for Dogs, a natural treat for dogs" are included.

Additionally, the "Lollipup" (available only in the peanut butter flavor) comes in a 1 ounce bag with the Husk E. Dog on the front, and has the name "Lollipup" on the back and contains 1 large bone.

The "Polar Pooch Pouch" (offered only in the carrot cake flavor) is a 5 ounce bag with the Husk E Dog on the front, with "canine carrot cake" written across the front of the bag and contains 12 medium bones.

Dec 19, 2008 - FDA Continues To Receive Complaints about Chicken Jerky Products for Dogs and Cautions Consumers

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to caution consumers of a potential association between the development of illness in dogs and the consumption of chicken jerky products also described as chicken tenders, strips or treats. FDA continues to receive complaints of dogs experiencing illness that their owners or veterinarians associate with consumption of chicken jerky products. The chicken jerky products are imported to the U.S. from China. FDA issued a cautionary warning to consumers in September 2007.

June 19, 2008 - FDA Requests Seizure of Animal Food Products at PETCO Distribution Center

Today, at the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Marshals seized various animal food products stored under unsanitary conditions at the PETCO Animal Supplies Distribution Center located in Joliet, Ill., pursuant to a warrant issued by the United States District Court in Chicago.

During an FDA inspection of a PETCO distribution center in April, widespread and active rodent and bird infestation was found. The FDA inspected the facility again in May and found continuing and widespread infestation.

The distribution center in Joliet, Ill., provides pet food products and supplies to PETCO retail stores in 16 states including Alabama, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Wisconsin.

April 3, 2008 - Prairie™ Lamb Meal and Oatmeal Medley for Cats Product Alert

Nature’s Variety has withdrawn distribution of Prairie Lamb Meal and Oatmeal Medley for Cats with the “best if used by” dates of 12/20/08 and 1/25/09. If you purchased a bag of Prairie Lamb Meal and Oatmeal Medley for Cats with those specific “best if used by” dates, please return it to the store for a replacement or refund. The “best if used by” dates are located on the back of the package.

The products with a “best if used by” date of 12/20/08 have an unacceptable level of oxidized fat. Oxidation may create an unusual odor. The products with a “best if used by” date of 1/25/09 have an unacceptable appearance – this kibble is quite crumbly and very dark in color.

Some consumers who are fed Instinct™ Chicken Meal Formula grain-free kibble for dogs to their pet, have had their dog experience loose stools and occasional vomiting. If your dog has experienced this and your bag of Instinct Chicken Meal Formula displays a “best if used by” date of 1/3/09 or 1/10/09, you may return it to your retail store for a replacement or refund. Nature’s Variety has not changed the formulation of Instinct Chicken Meal Formula grain-free kibble for dogs. However, recent changes in production facilities caused these two code dates of product to differ enough from the previous product to cause some digestive upset in some dogs.

Mar 7, 2008 -The Hartz Mountain Corporation Recalls Vitamin Care for Cats Because of Possible Health Risk

The Hartz Mountain Corporation is voluntarily recalling a second specific lot of Hartz Vitamin Care for Cats due to concerns that bottles within the lot may have been potentially contaminated with Salmonella. Both lot codes were manufactured for Hartz by UFAC (USA) Inc. in 2007, and were removed from distribution last November. However, bottles from the second lot had been shipped to customers prior to their having been removed from distribution.

The product involved is 739 bottles of Hartz Vitamin Care for Cats, lot code SZ 22771, UPC number 32700-97701.

December 27, 2007 - Nutro Modifies Advertising Claims For Lite Pet Food Products

Hill’s Pet Nutrition challenged Nutro’s claims on their “lite” pet food because Hill’s said the pet food products exceeded the maximum calorie allowance for lite pet food according to industry guidelines.

After reviewing the products and evidence, the NAD concluded that Natural Choice Lite and Natural Choice Small Bites Lite did not meet AAFCO’s standards for “lite” pet food products.

Sep 18, 2007 -Bravo! Issues Nationwide Recall of Select Poultry Products for Dogs and Cats

Bravo! announces a voluntary recall of select tubes of three of its poultry products for cats and dogs. The pet food is being recalled because two of the products have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella and Listeria monocytogenes, while the other product has the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Aug 21, 2007- Select Red Flannel Large Breed Adult Formula Dry Dog Food 50lb Bags Voluntarily Recalled in Pennsylvania

April 16, 2007 - T.W. Enterprises Issues Nationwide Recall of Dog Chews Due to Salmonella Contamination

T.W. Enterprises of Ferndale, WA today alerted consumers that it is recalling certain dog chews it markets because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. Samples tested by FDA of the product indicate that the dog chew products manufactured by T.W. Enterprises may be contaminated. People handling these treats can become infected with Salmonella, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the chews or any surfaces exposed to these products.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today warned consumers not to use American Bullie A.B. Bull Pizzle Puppy Chews and Dog Chews manufactured and distributed by T.W. Enterprises, Ferndale, WA, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Mar 30, 2007 -Eight In One Announces Nationwide Recall of All Lots Of Dingo® Chick’n Jerky Treats for Dogs, Cats And Ferrets

Eight In One, Inc., a division of United Pet Group, Inc., is voluntarily recalling nationally all lots of Dingo® CHICK'N JERKY treats due to Company concerns that the jerky treats have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The products affected were sold at Target, PetSmart and other retailers. The products subject to this voluntary recall are Dingo CHICK'N JERKY 3.5 oz. and 8 oz. for dogs and Dingo Kitty CHICKEN JERKY 1.5 oz. for cats and Dingo Ferret CHICKEN JERKY 1.5 oz for ferrets.
